Culinary tour through Hamburg’s “alternative heart”: the Schanzenviertel
Experience culinary highlights and be inspired by both the history and current events of the Sternschanze. Experience a culinary city tour through one of Hamburg’s liveliest districts.
Formerly located on the outskirts of the city, the Sternschanze is now a culturally active, trendy district of Hamburg. Artists work alongside hipsters, the left-wing scene with “Rote Flora” has its headquarters and newcomers live alongside long-established Hamburg residents. Your tour guide will take you on a culinary tour through cafés and restaurants from a variety of cultures that still characterize this colorful district today. Recognized as a separate district in 2008, this district looks back on an eventful history, which begins in the 17th century with a former defence system. It is formed by the influence of different cultures.
The Portuguese immigrants of the 1970s were followed by other immigrants who built new lives here and also distinguished the Schanze in terms of cuisine: there is a good reason that the main street is called “Galao-Strich” (Schulterblatt). In addition to enjoying culinary delicacies, learning about historical facts and getting information about recent events, you will find out where the name “Schulterblatt” comes from, what Carl Hagenbeck did in the Sternschanze and which architectural buildings characterize the ‘Schanze’. Today it is one of the most expensive districts to live in. A rapid change, conveyed on a fascinating tour! On our three-hour tour you will taste sweet and savory dishes and be provided with detailed information about one of Hamburg’s most beautiful districts!
