Variety for your head and stomach
This is the insider tour through one of the most contrasting and colorful districts in Hamburg. On our 3-hour food tour, our cheerful tour guides will take you through the streets and restaurants of this special part of the city. You will taste five different specialties.
St. Georg is located right in the heart of Hamburg, between the Alster and the main train station. Today it is one of the most exciting places in the city: a colorful district with all shades of gray. Christopher Street Day, Lange Reihe and Hansaplatz: pride meets chic, meets twilight. The many contrasts and contradictions make this insider tour a unique experience.
Originally, St. Georg was a dark and hopeless place just outside Hamburg, where violence and death were the order of the day. Hamburg’s gallows and the Plague Hospice were located here – both gruesome places where people expected to die. All the more remarkable that it has now become a multicultural model district and a real insider tip! People of different origins, sexual orientations and religious beliefs live together peacefully here, including many artists and creative people. Together we marvel at the most important cultural places in the district, including churches and theaters. We stroll along the “Lange Reihe”, the “main street” of the district with all its bars, cafés, restaurants and boutiques. Christopher Street Day starts here every year. And we stop in front of the S.L.U.T., Hamburg’s toughest fetish club. It’s not for nothing that St. Georg is considered a gay and lesbian rainbow stronghold…
On the seedy Hansaplatz you will find out interesting facts about the neighborhood’s eventful recent history. Until a few years ago, even hardened Hamburg residents avoided Hansaplatz, because St. Georg’s dark face continued to show itself here: for a long time, the mafia, drug and human trafficking, and prostitution ensured that St. Georg was considered a tough place. But now the residents are ensuring that this reputation is a thing of the past.
Together we go in search of clues: What makes St. Georg special today? Our qualified tour guides look forward to entertaining you with interesting background information and exciting anecdotes. Of course, they also have answers to your questions. Hamburg residents and die-hard St. Georgians will also get their money’s worth. Did you know that the oldest house in Hamburg is located here? And that Heidi Kabel and Hans Albers, two of Hamburg’s absolute artistic veterans, had their roots in St. Georg?
And since many a gastronomic pearl has washed ashore in St. Georg and it’s simply impossible to explore properly with a growling stomach, we stop off at five selected restaurants. So we enjoy a unique part of Hamburg in a family atmosphere and end the day or evening together. Off to adventure!
