Insider Knowledge About Cologne and Its Brewery Culture
The Tour
Insider insights into Cologne’s city and brewery culture
Join your friendly tour guide on a walk through Cologne’s Old Town and discover the city and its brewery culture. Insider knowledge guaranteed! Of course, tasting selected Kölsch beers is a must!
We’ll take a two-hour tour through Cologne’s Old Town, visiting selected breweries. The tour begins at the most iconic building in the city: Cologne Cathedral. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the heart of the city and considered one of Germany’s top landmarks – truly impressive! Afterwards, we’ll explore the Old Town and make our way to Alter Markt. The Old Town is known for its many historic breweries, where the famous Kölsch is served in a relaxed atmosphere to thirsty guests.
Let’s mingle with the cheerful locals, the Kölner! Here, good vibes aren’t just a Carnival thing. During this brewery tour, we’ll get an authentic look at the city’s unique culture. Between stops, our guides will share historical and current insights with you. They’ll also offer up their personal survival tips for Cologne!
The Kölsch and Brewery Tour answers questions like:
- Why is Kölsch so much better than Altbier?
- What do Köbes, Kranz, Pittermännchen, and Halve Hahn mean?
- Who’s worse than the plague and the Protestants?
- What does the Cathedral cost and who pays for it?
An important part of this tour is learning the proper way to enjoy Kölsch as we sample various types. Your guide will show you how it’s done! Along with the brewery visits, we’ll pass the Hennes at the Cathedral, the Heinzelmännchen Fountain, and a few of the city’s famous “Büdchen” (kiosks). Use this tour as the perfect start to an unforgettable evening with more Kölsch and check out additional breweries recommended by your guide.
Depending on the mood and current events, we’ll visit three of the following breweries:
- Gaffel am Dom – the oldest building at the foot of the Cathedral with great atmosphere
- Brauhaus FRÜH – the largest brewery in the city
- Brauhaus Sion – We owe it to Hans Sion that Kölsch still exists today!
- Peters Brauhaus – one of Cologne’s youngest breweries
- Brauhaus “Sünner im Walfisch” – Sünner stands for Kölsch tradition among beer lovers
- Brauhaus en d’r Salzgasse – the former brewery “Zur Täsch”
