Berlin Wall Clue Hunt and Guided History Tour
Embark on an exciting search for clues along the former route of the Berlin Wall. Together with our qualified guides, you will spend two hours immersing yourself in a remarkable chapter of German history: It is August 13, 1961. A day that will change the fate of millions of people—because today, the Soviet occupying power is closing the borders with the zones controlled by the other victorious Allied powers. West Berlin is now completely isolated, an island in the middle of East Germany.
On this tour, you will become a border crosser yourself! Together with your highly knowledgeable and dedicated tour guide, you will embark on a journey through time: You will visit the original sites while your tour guide shares fascinating, moving, and sometimes tragic anecdotes about the realities of life during this bygone era.
We will visit the following historic sites
- The former Nordbahnhof ghost station (at the meeting point)
- A church demolished with explosives in the death strip
- A rye field with symbolic significance
- Bernauer Straße, a street of tragic renown
- Tunnel 57
- The site of one of the most famous photographs in history: border guard Conrad Schumann’s leap over the barbed wire
- The fall of the Wall at Schwedter Straße
At each location, you will learn about the circumstances behind many individual fates. This will bring the realities of life at that time vividly to mind. You will hear stories of lies and betrayal on the one hand, and boundless love and heroism on the other. For example, you will learn about people who wanted only one thing after the sudden division: to get out.
Not every escape attempt had a happy ending. The number of deaths at the border is shocking. On this tour, we also aim to help preserve the memory of these tragic heroes by telling their stories.
And, of course, the prominent figures of politics and the arts must not be forgotten:
- The victorious Allied powers, represented by Roosevelt/Truman, Churchill, and Stalin
- The hard-line Khrushchev
- Ulbricht and perhaps the most famous lie in German history
- John F. Kennedy and his most famous sentence
- Udo Lindenberg and his special train to Pankow
- Pink Floyd and “The Wall”
- The dance-loving director Heiner Müller
- Gorbachev, who finally took the people seriously
Your guide has plenty of astonishing insider anecdotes in store for you. Even if you witnessed these events personally or are related to someone affected by them, you will discover many new details about the turbulent days—from the closing of the borders to the joyful, exuberant, and peaceful reunification. For example, how a brief afternoon nap caused the borders to open ahead of schedule…
This finally brings us to the end of a bloody and tragic era—a fortunate turn in history to which our two-hour Wall tour also owes its happy ending. Now you can decide (freely!) whether to bring your eventful day to a relaxing close—or head straight into a new adventure in boundless Berlin.
